McElroy was named director of the UT-Austin School of Journalism in 2018. Previously, she spent nearly 30 years as a professional journalist and had a long career at The New York Times, where she held positions including associate managing editor, dining editor, deputy sports editor and deputy editor of the website. McElroy also worked for the Austin American-Statesman, The Huntsville Item and the Bryan-College Station Eagle.
