García served as president of the University of Texas at Brownsville for 22 years. She played a critical role in establishing the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she currently works as a professor. In 2016, Garcia joined the UT System as senior adviser to the chancellor for community, national and global engagement. In 1986, García became the first female Mexican American president of a college or university.
