McIlwain is vice provost and professor of Media, Culture & Communication at New York University, where his work and expertise focus on race and digital media technology. He is the author of “Black Software: The Internet & Racial Justice, From the AfroNet to Black Lives Matter,” and co-authored the award-winning book “Race Appeal: How Candidates Invoke Race in U.S. Political Campaigns.”
